Winning first prize in an invited design competition this design offers and extension to and renovation of an historic sports hall in Berlin, Germany. Referencing the school house that was destroyed in World War II, our building quietly follows the school's footprint while creating a backdrop to the beautiful brick work of the historic sports hall. A plinth frames the site while offering a ramp and stairs leading up to the new change rooms, coach rooms and storage facilities. An outdoor room framed by the two new structures becomes a quiet place to gather, hold outdoor classes, and relax. The buildings emphasize the contrast of heavy and light, with thick recycled brick walls anchoring the design and a light channel glass facade lining the corridor and shower facilities. The white channel glass provides a neutral backdrop to the existing red brick architecture while allowing natural light to permeate the interior. The translucent nature of the material preserves privacy needed in a changing room and shower facility. Sustainability was a driving feature throughout the design process. The roof slopes in on three sides, gathering rainwater into a basin between the changing rooms. This water feature serves multiple purposes. An underground storage tank holds the gray water for use in toilets and landscape irrigation. A pool with aquatic plants naturally purifies the waste water while the entire system slows storm water runoff. – Collaboration with Mathewson Architecture Berlin and Extern Landscape Architects
